E36 M3 is faster, handles better, and the parts will be cheaper. The E46 330 is not as fast, handles well but not as straight edge, more comfortable, nicer interior and newer. Also it depends on who owned the M3 before they take more of a beating then the 330s usually will. You may also be able to get a CPO 330 and still have a warranty.

You had a choice of 6-speed (3 pedals) manual, 5-speed auto (Steptronic), or "SMG" (SSG), which is a 6-speed manual with an automated clutch. The SMG/SSG should not be considered "an automatic". Don't forget that pre-2004 3-pedal 330Ci only had a 5 speed. That's the only time there was a change from 5 to 6 speeds for the 330Ci.

E46s, while alluring with their relatively "cheap" prices of entry, are by no means "cheap" to maintain. Expect $1k+/year to maintain, some years more (tires, brakes, major maintenance), some years less (only fluid/filter changes). They are reliable cars, but that's really only if you stay on top of preventative maintenance.
330ci aftermarket suspension overhaul. I've had my 2004 330Ci since it had 81k miles in 2012 at age 15, and now at age 20 I've got a deteriorating 134k mile car that I'm super in love with. As winter break approaches, I'm planning on doing (essentially) a mechanical restoration with everything from spark plugs to replacing the cooling system.
I'm looking for tyres for BMW E46 330ci. I have r17 wheels, so the tyres should have following parameters: 225/45/r17 91W (according to the bmw spec). I have selected two models: - Dunlop SportMaxx RT 2 225/45/r17 91Y - Michelin Pilot Sport 4 225/45/r17 94W XL Those models aren't available in the version 91W. Both models have excellent ratings:
